The In-tray
Your manager is on leave, it is Tuesday, and ten things are about to land. The In-tray builds that morning: who writes in, what arrives and when, what each way of dealing with it costs in minutes, and what the choices add up to. Learners clear the tray against a running clock and get a debrief that says something in words rather than a score. It leaves the builder as one file.

Everything costs time, and the clock does not wait while you think
An in-tray is the oldest assessment-centre exercise there is, and the paper version has one flaw: nothing costs anything. Here every way of dealing with an item costs minutes out of the same morning, reading costs a minute, calendar commitments arrive whether or not the learner is ready, and the clock can run in real time so thinking has a price too. The builder tells you, as you write, whether the morning you have made can be done in full — because if it can, it is a reading exercise, not a triage one.
Items that react
Mail and chat land at set times or on a trigger. Each option can add to a measure, set a flag, cancel something still to come, or spawn a reply that lands later. Ignore the finance partner and the second email arrives; deal with it and it never does.
Measures, not marks
Two or three named dimensions, each with bands. The debrief tells the learner which band they landed in and what that says about how they worked — judgement, relationships, focus — in the words you wrote, not a percentage.
Reporting an LMS can use
